The marshmallow plant is a perennial shrub with small, pink flowers and grey-green leaves, growing mainly in swampy areas. The origin of the plant is in western Asia and North Africa, but it is also found in Europe. In ancient times, the marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) plant was already used for medicinal purposes. The ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians used parts of the plant to treat a range of ailments, from sore throats to wounds. The mucilaginous substances in Marshmallow can help restore the mucous membrane after irritation, which can make it a useful remedy for conditions such as coughs, sore throats and bronchitis.
