WHAT IS A THC DETOX AND HOW DO YOU DO IT?

Detoxing means cleansing your body of certain harmful chemicals, but did you know that you can also do a THC detox? When you use cannabis, THC stays in your body for a longer period of time. You may want to temporarily stop using cannabis to detox or your intention is to stop altogether. In this blog, we explain how to approach a THC detox and what you should and should not do.

THC detox: detoxifying the body

Some people want to temporarily stop using cannabis and therefore do a detox. But you may also want to stop altogether. These are good reasons to detoxify your body. You can do several things to support this process.

First of all, it is good to know what all comes into play when you want to (temporarily) stop using cannabis. Weed, as everyone knows, contains the cannabinoid THC. This is the substance responsible for the high. THC is not the only cannabinoid in cannabis, there are more than a hundred of them (such as CBD, CBN, CBC and CBG). However, THC does cause the most notable effects.

If you have used cannabis, THC will be visible in both your blood and urine. This does not last long, usually it is no longer visible in the blood after 3 to 4 hours as your body drains it. Traces of THC do remain visible in your hair and in urine for longer. In urine, it is detectable for between 3 and 30 days on average. That there is so much difference is determined by the amount you use and the frequency of use. In hair, THC can be visible for up to 90 days or longer.

By detoxing, you can support your body in processing and excreting toxins. The body is basically capable of this itself, there is a continuous process going on to get rid of such substances. But there are some things you can do to help your body recover.

What can you do to detox?

When you want to do a THC detox, the most important thing, of course, is to quit cannabis. If you keep smoking, THC will also remain in your body. A detox does not mean that you just suddenly get rid of all the harmful substances quickly. There is no miracle cure that takes care of this. It's all about speeding up the process and giving yourself the support you need so that you suffer less.

1. Drinking water

Drinking enough water is always very important, but especially when doing a THC detox. Water is needed to get rid of waste products. The more you drink, the easier substances can be transported through the body. When you drink a lot of water, it supports metabolism and the processes taking place in organs like the liver and kidneys.

The idea is not to drink excessive amounts of water just to excrete as many substances as possible. Just drink enough water, at least 2 litres a day.

2. Lots of exercise

Exercise is a good way to support your health. It also helps to speed up metabolism and is therefore also important during a detox. It supports the proper functioning of your organs. So go out and do some sport, it doesn't matter whether it is walking, playing tennis or mountain biking. Above all, do something you enjoy. Exercise can also contribute to your detox mentally. Quitting weed can be difficult. More exercise has been proven to make you feel more positive and reduce depression and anxiety.

3. Healthy diet

What you eat can also support the THC detox process. Especially go for lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, eat whole-grain cereals and some meat and fish. These provide your body with valuable nutrients, which helps keep your body healthy and your organs functioning properly. Of course, it's a good idea to keep this up even after your detox.

4. Zinc

Zinc is a mineral that is important when detoxing. The liver needs it to perform its tasks, including detoxifying the body. Therefore, you should make sure you get enough zinc. Bear in mind that zinc is not a miracle pill that will make all THC disappear from your system instantly. It is just that it is an important mineral for the liver, and it may make sense to take zinc as a supplement. Don't take more than the recommended daily amount.

If you think you might be deficient in various vitamins and minerals, opt for an organic multivitamin, such as Together's Vegan Multi. This contains zinc, vitamin D3, vitamin B12, iron and calcium, among others.

Take your time with your THC detox

Detoxing is something the body already does naturally. If you want a THC detox, you can support your body in this by eating healthy, drinking enough, exercising regularly and possibly using a supplement. There are also detoxt drinks, but these have never been proven to do much to speed up the process.

A detox takes time. You will probably need time to mentally get used to the period without THC. So be kind to yourself, take it easy and see how you react to this period without cannabis. It can be enlightening to experience how you feel when not using cannabis. And keep in mind, that when you do start using again, you will react more sensitively to THC and the other cannabinoids. You'll probably need a lower dose.
