WHAT IS KRATOM AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Kratom has become more and more popular over the last few years. It is a drug with very diverse effects and, to put it mildly, an interesting leaf. This special drug is accessible to everyone and easy to order at our smartshop. But before you start using this drug - or simply want to know more about it - it is useful to know what you are actually using. What exactly is Kratom and how does it work? We will tell you in this article.
What is Kratom?
Kratom - also known as Mitragyna Speciosa - is a special plant that grows in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, mainly in Thailand and Malaysia. Traditionally the plant was used as a substitute for opium. In general, at low doses it has a stimulating effect and at higher doses a narcotic effect. However, the effect can vary from strain to strain.
Kratom is extracted from different subspecies of the same kind of tree. The height of these trees varies from 3 to 30 metres and the large leaves that grow on the trees are chewed in order to ingest the active substances. The effects per subspecies are different and the location where the tree grows also plays an important role, but more about that later.
How does Kratom work?
Kratom contains a number of active substances, so-called alkaloids. Mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitraphilline are the most important substances present. These substances from plants often have a certain psychoactive effect and are also used for that reason. They have a stimulating effect on the opiate receptors in your brain and work in a similar way to other opiates. They also act on your adrenaline, noradrenaline and serotonin receptors.
Kratom effects
The effects of Kratom differ per subspecies and therefore the effects can differ per product. Also the place of growth determines for a large part the effects: Kratom from South-East Asia generally contains more active ingredients than Kratom from other areas or cultivated Kratom. It is true that, no matter what kind of Kratom you take, at a low dosage you will experience a stimulating and euphoric feeling. At a high dosage Kratom often has a narcotic effect.
The most common effects of Kratom:
- Euphoric and stimulating effect
- Dreamy and narcotic effect
- Suppression of pain
- Sex drive increases or decreases
- Gives you energy, makes you happy and less anxious
The effects of Kratom become noticeable after 20 to 30 minutes after ingestion and last approximately - depending on the dose - 2 to 4 hours.
Side effects of Kratom
Kratom has a dehydrating effect, and therefore it is advisable to drink enough after the use of Kratom. This prevents dehydration and a 'hangover' effect. In the long run, Kratom can lead to a decreased appetite, weight loss and in extreme cases to anorexia. Therefore, we do not recommend long-term or daily use of Kratom.
The most common side effects of Kratom:
- Dry mouth or dehydration
- Nausea and headaches (hangover effect)
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Sweating
- Itching all over the body
Types of Kratom
There are different types of Kratom available. You can recognize them by the veins in the leaves. Each variety has its own effects and properties. We distinguish three types of Kratom:
- White variety: gives a euphoric feeling and a stimulating effect. It improves your mood and overall positive mood.
- Red variety: has a calming effect and makes you calmer. You have fewer fears and your mood becomes very relaxed.
- Green variety: This variety mainly gives you more energy. You can also mix this variety with the white and red varieties.
