WHAT IS THE HERB MULUNGU (ERYTHRINA MULUNGU)?

Ever heard of the herb Erythrina Mulungu? This Brazilian little tree has found its way to the Netherlands as a medicinal and mind-boosting remedy. The products derived from this small tree have several positive properties that might benefit you. For instance, it is a proven anti-anxiety agent. So of course, Mulungu can be found with us! What are all the known effects of Mulungu that make it so interesting? You can read it here!

The origins of Mulungu

Mulungu's full name is 'Erythrina Mulungu'. This is a small tree species native to Brazil. From this tree, you can use the bark, leaves and flowers for medicinal applications and for relaxation. Locals discovered this a few centuries ago. But even modern science is starting to notice the little tree for its various effects on body and mind. Below you can read what effects Mulungu can have. Is it something for you too?

What are the effects of Mulungu?

Erythrina Mulungu is used by people to induce different effects. The main one is to boost your mood. But this tree can do more, if we take a closer look at the ingredients it has such. For instance, it turns out that the bark contains two main active substances: alkaloids and flavonoids. Both have various positive effects on body and mind health.

Less stress, insomnia, anxiety and depression

Mulungu is mainly used to boost mood and reduce anxiety. Among other things, the bark of the tree contains lignans, which are believed to have antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. It is also used for insomnia.

Studies with rats show that Mulungu has stress-reducing properties. Now you may be thinking: nice for those rats, but what good is this information to me? Well, probably quite a lot! In fact, rats and other rodents are regularly used in studies on the effects of drugs. Often those effects correspond to those in us. Therefore, we should expect similar effects in humans. More research with human subjects will have to be done to say this with 100% certainty. Nevertheless, the experiences of users regarding the relaxing effects are positive, so do try it yourself.

Painkiller and anti-inflammatory

Just like several other products in our shop (such as CBD), Mulungu has an analgesic effect. For instance, it is used by people with rheumatic complaints or menstrual pain. The extra good news here is that research shows that you can use it as a painkiller without getting fuzzy. The same study also found anti-inflammatory effects. That effect of Mulungu is confirmed by another study. In it, it was found that mice with asthma could benefit from it, thanks to bringing down inflammation levels. Useful if your immune system could use a boost. Or if you have asthmatic symptoms – or your mouse, of course.

The compounds that cause Mulungu to have these analgesic effects include the compound echinacoside. This is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it contains the flavonoid quercetin, which has been shown to have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Come to think of it!

Serious complaints or medical condition? See your doctor first!

Finally, we want to put you on notice: in case of serious and long-term complaints, you definitely need help from a professional. Definitely try Mulungu if you have the occasional bit of (explainable and solvable) stress, or a few nights of less-than-perfect sleep. But are you actually heartbroken, anxious or depressed? Then it's time to visit your GP. Even if you have a condition for which you may or may not be taking medication, we recommend consulting your doctor before using Mulungu. After all, it may affect the effect of your medication or your body or mind.

Dosage of Mulungu

So what is the best dose for Mulungu? That depends mainly on which one you have in your hands and how you take it. In our webshop, you can find Indian Spirit Mulungu. We recommend dissolving two heaped teaspoons in 250ml of water, which you let rest for about twenty minutes. Then strain it through a filter to obtain a drinkable elixir.
